State & Federal Laws and Regulations

Dear PSOMS Member and Colleague,

We are passing on this information for those of you who are treating patients in the hospital regarding the Pennsylvania Drug Monitoring Program.

Effective January 1, 2017 there were revisions to the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) based on legislation signed in November 2016 by governor Wolf.

On the inpatient side, physicians will be required to query the site at least once during the time of admission through discharge if there is an order for a controlled substance.

Prescribers must also query the site each time they prescribe to an existing or new patient:

1. If a new prescription for a controlled substance is written.

2. If a prescriber believes or has reason to believe, using sound clinical judgment, that a patient may be abusing or diverting drugs; or

3. Each time a patient is prescribed an opioid drug product, benzodiazepine or other CII, CIII, CIV or CV by the prescriber.
